Dave is a biological soil researcher and  advocate for regenerative farming. With roots in dairy farming in Co. Cork and a professional background in structural engineering and international disaster relief, Dave brings a unique perspective to his work, as well as a wealth of knowledge and passion for soil health and composting.

He encourages growers to truly engage with the soil from its microbial networks to its role in carbon storage and water retention. As part of this interactive soil workshop, the interns brought soil samples from their host farms for analysis and learned what to look for when sampling soil.

The workshop day included microscope demonstrations of microbial life in soil and compost  – fascinating to identify all the activities under the microscope, as well as interactive compost diagnostics – assessing temperature, moisture, texture, and microbial activity from the samples the interns had brought to the workshop. Dave also provided practical guidance on life-led soil care – supporting living roots, organic matter cycling and reduced disturbance.

The compost competition digging through samples to find the most vibrant microbial life was a highlight, blending science, observation and a bit of fun! Our interns left the session with a richer understanding of what makes healthy soil and how to foster it.
