Representing organic growers at national level is an important part of the remit of the OGI. As part of this work the OGI attends the twice-yearly Horticulture Industry Forum (HIF) to ensure that the voice of organic growers is brought to the table. OGI chairperson, Orla Burke reports from the most recent HIF meeting.

The Horticulture Industry Forum met on November 4th and was the last one attended by Minister Pippa Hackett ahead of the general election. Peter Donnellan stepped down as Chairperson and Orla McManus, CEO of Commercial Mushroom Producers was elected new Chairperson. The main issue addressed on the day was the challenge of access to labour and the rising cost of labour across the horticulture sector.

OGI representative Orla Burke highlighted how the shortage of labour and cost of labour is affecting small-medium growers. Representatives of larger growers lobbied for movement on the pilot Seasonal Employment Permit for workers from outside of the EU. It was also highlighted that the Food Regulator which is now 12 months in operation needs more powers to ensure more engagement from industry stakeholders.

Some updates on the Horticulture Strategy and its 8 Key Strategic Actions were also provided at this meeting including:

  • Owen Doyle and Brian Arnold who are leading key strategic action 4 of the Horticulture Strategy to review horticulture course availability and suitability for a modern, dynamic industry were introduced to the forum (Action 4).
  • Teagasc will host a webinar on the benefits of producer organisations on December 4th.
  • The DAFM horticulture division is analysing the Small Growers Survey and will work with Bord Bia to design supports for small- medium growers. (Action 1)
  • The Retail Charter is completed and will be presented to all five main retailers by Christmas. (Action 2)
